Dr. Xu received her Ph.D. from MIT in 1995, and she is currently Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, USA.
Fei Xu is a Director of Berkeley Early Learning Lab. Her research focuses on cognitive and language development from infancy to middle childhood. In recent years, she has developed a rational constructivist theory of cognitive development, arguing that language learning, Bayesian inductive inference, and constructive thinking are among the main learning mechanisms that explain how children acquire knowledge rapidly across a number of content domains. She is interested in how infants and children combine prior knowledge and statistical information in the input in physical reasoning, psychological reasoning, word learning, probabilistic reasoning, causal learning, and social cognition. She also collaborates with computational cognitive scientists to develop probabilistic models of cognitive development. In addition, she investigates mechanisms of learning by comparing typical and atypical development, especially in children with autism.
